Worth the Cure is a hepatitis C virus (HCV) campaign website designed to foster collaboration and shared learning. Our communities are strengthened by common advocacy aims, to demand affordable HCV diagnostic and treatment programs, and the lifting of treatment restrictions. Resources are available on this site to support these activist efforts, so please browse Worth the Cure materials and gather what you need to organise with your peers.
Everyone living with and vulnerable to HCV infection is worth the cure!
HCV is a chronic condition that can be cured in as little as 8 weeks with oral medications. However, numerous unnecessary barriers deny the cure to millions of people, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). These barriers include:
- Lack of regulatory approval and/or registration for generic HCV treatments
- HCV diagnostics and treatments not included in national public health plans
- Out of pocket costs for patients that put care out of reach, particularly for diagnostics
- Restrictions on public health plans, including requirements to abstain from drugs and alcohol
- Criminalization of key populations – including LGBT+, people who use drugs and sex workers – that keep people from care
- Lack of funding for HCV programs and care
- Lack of access to affordable generic treatments in middle income countries (MICs)
Communities and countries face specific challenges and barriers to universal testing and treatment for HCV. However, advocates continue to make progress and win victories. Worth The Cure is dedicated to sharing lessons learned, training resources and tools to help your community fight and win the HCV cure for all who need it!
